A new era for orbital habitation began with the successful deployment and pressurization of Haven 1, a prototype modular habitat designed by the private space company Vast. This event, occurring in Low Earth Orbit, marks a significant step toward making long-duration stays beyond Earth more comfortable and personalized.
Launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral, Haven 1 reached its operational altitude in August 2026. The module, a collaboration between Vast and Axiom Space for initial integration, measures 10 meters in diameter and 18 meters in length, providing a substantial 200 cubic meters of habitable volume. It is designed to support a four-person crew for up to 30 days.
A key innovation lies in its modular interior, which allows residents to reconfigure living and working spaces. This adaptability offers a stark contrast to the fixed layouts of previous orbital stations, fostering a greater sense of personal agency for those living off-world.
